Casinos closing Swedish markets due to new law
As of January 1st 2019 the new Swedish gambling law will take effect.
The new law will change a lot of rules for land-based and online casinos.
The biggest change is the fact that online casinos now need to have a special license to be able to offer online gambling to the Swedish market.
Because of this new law a lot of online casinos will close their doors for Swedish players. Especially the smaller online casinos won’t be able to afford the license, which will cost between 400.000 and 700.000 SEK.
But there are also more than 70 online casinos that have already applied for a Swedish license. Which casinos is not really known yet, but I am sure that the big players like Betsson, Unibet and William Hill are some of them.
I also think most of the top 10 casinos on the right will keep accepting Swedish players.
One more thing that you must consider if you are from Sweden. All players will need a new account. You can’t play with your old account. So you probably need to sign up again when the law takes effect.
This does mean that you are probably able to claim a new welcome bonus, even if you already had in the past.
But because of the new law, Swedish players can only receive a one-time bonus when they sign up. Online casinos can no longer offer cash back deals, loyalty points or other free spins or cash bonuses once they have received their welcome bonus.
So offering a solid online casino will become very important if you want to get Swedish players to keep playing. They will now look for casinos offering a lot of payment methods, offering very fast payouts of winnings and also a huge amount of choices when it comes to games. Customer support will also be more important than ever.
