Merlin’s Grimoire Overview
Of course Merlin is best known from the Arthurian legend. The mightiest wizard there was. And this new game from Play’n Go is set around Merlin and his magical book, a grimoire. Hence the name Merlin’s Grimoire.
The symbols are placed on stone tablets and set against a deep jungle. It all feels very mystical.
It comes with all sort of mythical symbols together with scrolls, knives and Merlin himself as the highest paying symbol.
The game is played on 5 reels which are 3 symbols high and comes with 243 ways instead of paylines.
You will also find a book symbol, the grimoire, on all reels. This symbol counts as a wild symbol but is also the scatter symbol.
Merlin’s Grimoire comes with a huge maximum payout of 30.000 times your bet!
Merlin’s Grimoire Features
Splitting symbols
During the base game you will see special glyphs above reels 2, 3 and 4. At random one or more of these can start to glow. When they do all symbols landing on that specific reel will split into two. This will increase the number of ways.
The book symbol can also split, which makes it a double wild. But it does still count as only one book as a scatter.
Free Spins Feature
Three or more scatter symbols will trigger 10 free spins.
Before free spins start one random symbol is chosen to act as a special expanding symbol. This symbol will expand to cover the entire reels and pays anywhere, no matter from which reel.
Also during free spins all 5 reels will have the special glyph above the reels, so now all symbols on all reels can split. Giving the maximum of 7776 ways when they are all active.
3 or more book symbols during free spins will add 10 more free spins.
Verdict
Somehow this game feels like a mix of a classic “Book of” slot and games like Prism of Gems and Forge of Gems. Combining the classic “Book of” bonus with splitting symbols.
And I think it’s a nice match. It works.
The special reels that split symbols seem to be activated quite often. And of course during free spins, with that expanding symbol, it can give some huge wins. Up to 30.000 times even, which is a very big number, even for Play’n Go.
I also the theme is nice. They have more of these types of themes, like for instance Rise of Merlin, but I like it a lot and it looks very cool.
Overall a great new title from Play’n Go and definitely worth a try.
