Down the Rails Overview
Pragmatic Play released a new online slot game called Down the Rails.
This game centers around the London tube system. The underground as some might call it. Combined with classic characters from British history, like for instance Shakespeare, Churchill and Newton.
You will find 5 reels, each 3 symbols high and the game comes with 20 lines.
Beside all the regular card symbols and the characters you will also find wild symbols and bonus symbols on all reels. All symbols, except those wilds and bonus symbols, can appear stacked on all reels.
Down the Rails comes with a maximum payout of 5.000 times your bet.
Down the Rails Features
Random Features
During any normal spin a train might run through the screen and award one of 5 random bonuses.
- Tunnel Vision – Special mystery symbols are randomly added to the reels, all these symbols will change into one and the same symbol
- The Big Smoke – a random colossal 3 by 3 regular symbol or bonus symbol is added to reels 1, 2, 3 or 4
- Wild Strike – random wild symbols are added to the reels
- Shifting Stack – one or more random wild reels are added to the screen with a x2 or x3 multiplier
- Bonus Blitz – will award the bonus
Bonus (free spins)
3 or more scatter symbols will award one of 5 free spins features. After this you are able to gamble for a better feature, or take the feature you have. If you lose a gamble you are awarded with a cash reward of between 4 and 24 times your bet.
The 5 different features from lowest to highest are:
- Pentonville – You will receive 5 free spins. All winning combinations are marked into a cluster and the rest of the symbols respin. When you improve the cluster, respins keep continuing. Respins end when the cluster isn’t improved, after which you are paid.
- Kings Cross – You will receive 5 free spins. The middle reels have spots marked with a cross. When a wild symbol lands in a marked spot, all symbols in the other marked spots are transformed into wilds.
- Buckingham Palace – You will receive 8 free spins. A fully stacked wild symbol is added to the reels. If it lands outside of the screen, it is moved, so it covers all positions on its reel. In addition, all character symbols are transformed into the highest value one.
- Canary Wharf – You will receive 8 free spins. During these spins all character symbols can show a value of between x1 and x50. If a special collect symbol, which can now appear, lands on the reels, all values are collected.
- End of the Line – This is a Hold & Respin feature where you start with 3 respins. Every time a character symbol land, which will now have cash values, the respins reset. These symbols are held and have a cash value of between x1 and x2500x. Which values are collected at the end of the bonus. You can also land special symbols that will award:
- Extra Life – collect 3 of these to gain 1 extra life that will reset spins to 3 if it goes to zero.
- Prize Boost – every 3 of these collected increases the value of money symbols on the screen.
- Expand – every 3 collected adds a row to the grid, up to 5 rows high at the most.
- Multiplier – every 3 of these symbols collected increases a multiplier from x2 to x3, then to x5. Multipliers are applied to the total win at the end of the round.
The bonus ends when you have no more respins, have fully filled in the reels or have reached the maximum win of 5.000 times your bet.
Verdict
As you can see, Down the Rails comes with a lot of different features. 5 random bonuses and alos 5 different free spins features.
It seems to me they have taken a good look at Blueprint Gaming. A lot of their games do this, add all sorts of random bonuses and free spins features. Which is always nice of course.
The gambling for better free spins can always feel a bit disappointing when you lose the gamble. But that’s the risk, you can always keep the feature you have received if you worry.
The theme itself is pretty original, but I personally don’t like the style they picked. I think the characters look ugly and unappealing. But it didn’t bother me too much.
Overall it’s a fun game with enough bonuses to keep you interested for a while.
