Pragmatic Play has released another online slot game with the Megaways mechanism and this one is called Ancient Island Megaways.
It seems that it’s taken a lot of inspiration from Incan or Mayan civilization with the way the reels are set within a temple like structure and colorful masks and other symbols. Where the game seems to take place on some hidden, undiscovered ancient island.
You will find 6 reels that are between 2 and 7 symbols high during each spin. There is also a top row of special symbols, but these aren’t normal paying symbols, but special modifier symbols. This setup can give up to a maximum of 117.649 Megaways per spin.
Besides standard card symbols and different kind of colorful animals and masks as medium to high paying symbols, you will also find scatter symbols on all reels. Which are green gems. Then there are wild symbols, which only appear on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Ancient Island Megaways comes with a pretty solid maximum payout of 10.000 times your bet and is a high volatile slot game.

Winning combinations are removed from the reels and all symbols fall down. New symbols fall on top and can award another winning combination and the process keeps repeating until no new winning combinations appear.
Wilds and Top Modifiers
Each wild symbol that appears will expand to cover the entire reel.
The top row of symbols can have special modifier symbols on them. When a wild symbol aligns with one of the bonus symbols on top, the modifier is awarded.

- Multiplier – Awards a multiplier of between x2 and x100, which is applied to all wins during the current spin. If more than one multiplier is awarded they are added together
- Max Megaways – Will increases the total number of megaways to the maximum of 117.649 by adding random symbols to all reels
- Replace Non Winning Symbols – symbols on the reels are shuffled around to create a winning combination
- Extra Wild Reel – an extra wild reel is awarded somewhere on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 and if it contains a modifier, it also awarded
Free Spins Features
4, 5 and 6 scatter symbols will award 12, 14 and 16 free spins respectively.
During free spins all symbols on the top row will have a modifier, always awarding a bonus when a wild symbol appears. Also wild symbols seem to appear more often during free spins, even though the paytable doesn’t say that.
There is now also an extra modifier which can award 2, 3, 5 or 10 extra free spins.

Verdict
Ancient Island Megaways is a pretty cool new Megaways slot game.
Mainly because of that top row of modifiers. It’s just a lot of fun activating them and hoping for a good reward. But especially during free spins, when you know you will get it once a wild lands. And getting more than one modifier can really award a great combination of bonuses.
The theme is nicely done, although something we’ve seen a lot before already. But I’m not mad about it.
Overall a good addition to the Megaways slots from Pragmatic Play.
