As the name might suggests, revolving around the goddess Athena. Which was the goddess of war and wisdom in ancient Greek. A lot of times accompanied with an owl. Which are both present next to the reels on this slot game.
You will find 6 reels that are each 5 symbols high and comes with 19 paylines.
Besides low paying card symbols and medium to high paying Greek mythology symbols you will also find wild symbols on all reels. Scatter, or Free Spins symbols, can also appear on all reels. And lastly there is a special Fortune Symbol, which can trigger a feature, explained below.

Features
Goddess Re-spins and Fortune Reveals
When a winning combination appears, its symbols are highlighted with Flaming Frames and a Goddess Re-spin is triggered. During re-spins, all Flaming Frames and the symbols inside them remain sticky. If a Fortune symbol is included in a re-spin, it receives a Blue Flaming Frame. Scatters that land as part of a sticky winning combination also become sticky, even without a frame. Any new symbol that improves the win, or creates a new one, also becomes sticky and awards another re-spin. Re-spins continue until no win is improved and no new win is created; then payouts are made.
If a Fortune symbol remains on the reels at the end of the Goddess Re-spins, it activates all Flaming Frames after the win has been paid. Activated frames reveal special symbols: Bronze, Silver, or Gold Coins (valued at 0.2x–4x, 5x–20x, or 25x–500x respectively), Amphora’s, Green Shields, or Red Shields.
After the symbols are revealed, Shields activate.
Green Shields multiply adjacent Coins or Amphora’s by x2 to x20.
Red Shields multiply all Coins or Amphora’s by the same range of values.
When Shields are finished, Amphora’s activate (from top to bottom, left to right), collecting and storing the values of all Coins and other Amphora’s. After this, any remaining Flaming Frames activate again to reveal new special symbols, repeating the sequence. When the process concludes, all values in view are awarded.
Free Spins Features
Hacksaw Gaming is offering three different free spins features on this slot, depending on how many scatters triggered the bonus.
- Omen of War – 3 scatter symbols – 10 free spins where all Flamed Frames stay flamed until the end of the feature, even if they activate in between spins. Minimum coin value is x1. 2 or 3 scatters during these spins adds 2 and 4 extra free spins respectively.
- Siege of Troy – 4 scatter symbols – 12 free spins with the same features as Omen of War, but when Fortune Reveal happens, at least one symbol is a shield.

Spear of Athena offers several bonus buy options. For 3x the bet you can activate a 5 times higher chance of triggering the bonus. 60x the bet will guarantee at least 1 winning combination and 1 Fortune Reveal symbol. Omen of War can be bought for 100x bet and Siege of Troy for 250x bet. Athena Ascents isn’t available as a bonus buy.
Verdict
Spear of Athena is a very nice looking slot game, but to be honest, the Greek theme is something that has been done a lot. And isn’t very original.
Features are great, but also not new. Several other Hacksaw Gaming slots already use the same features. So the game feels a bit like a re skin.
Overall I did enjoy the game. I really like the features and the game can pay some massive wins. Especially for a medium volatile game.
