Play’n Go has decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Danish troll Hugo with his own special slot, simply called Hugo Legacy.
This cartoon aired for the first time on Danish television in 1990 and has stayed popular ever since. And Play’n Go already used this funny troll on two earlier games, Hugo and Hugo Carts.
But now, after a normal payline game and a ways game, Play’n Go decided to do what they do best, create a cluster pays slot.
The game uses 7 reels that are each 7 symbols high, which comes down to a grid of 49 symbols. And because it’s a cluster pays slot, each combination of 5 or more of the same symbols, horizontally or vertically connected, count as a winning combination.
Winning combinations are removed from the reels, all symbols fall down in empty spots and new symbols fall on top, creating the option for several wins in a row.
For symbols you will find all sorts of mining gear and the different characters, Hugo being the highest paying one. There are no bonus or scatter symbols, but there is a big diamond, which counts as the wild symbol.

Telephone
All winning symbols are removed from the grid and collected into a telephone. If you reach 15 number of collected symbols during a bought spin, you will activate one of the following random modifiers:
- Hugo – Will add between 5 and 8 random wilds
- Scylla – Keeps 1 or 2 symbol types and will destroy all other symbols
- Don Croco – Transforms between 2 and 5 different symbol types into other symbol types
- Fernando – Turns one random picked symbol type into wilds
- Jean Paul – Selects a random symbol and will create a winning cluster with it
Free Spin Feature
When you have at least 35 collected symbols in the telephone, you will trigger a free spin. But at 40, 45 and 50 collected symbols, the free spin will come with more modifiers and already collected wilds.
- 35 collected symbols will award 2 modifiers
- 40 collected symbols will award 3 modifiers
- 45 collected symbols will award 4 modifiers and already 5 wilds collected
- 50 collected symbols will award 5 modifiers and already 30 wilds collected
You will get 1 free spin. During this spin random modifiers will be activated, one after the other, depending on how many you where awarded.
And during this spin all winnings wild symbols will be collected into a seperate meter. After all modifiers are done, these collected wilds will be added back onto the grid. From between 5 and 10 at a time.
Gamble Free Spin
When you trigger the free spin, you also have the option to gamble this for a higher level, if you didn’t have the highest level yet. If you lose a gamble, you are awarded the 1 spin with only 1 modifier.
Verdict
Of course Play’n Go is known for their cluster pays slots. Games like Viking Runecraft Apocalypse and Reactoonz 2 are just two of their huge catalogue. So they know how to create these types of games and make them fun.
And they did it again with Hugo Legacy. Even if you don’t know the intellectual property at all, that doesn’t matter. This game is so full of fun features and bonuses, that it’s never boring. And, especially with these types of games, when the game keeps going, it keeps going and can award great wins.
There is one small note of criticism and that’s the maximum payout. I feel it’s a bit low. I understand that it’s a medium volatile game, but a higher maximum win would have been appreciated.
