During the base game a random symbol might be picked to count as a mystery symbol. After the reels stoppen spinning and you are paid your normal win, when 3 or more of the chosen symbols appeared, they will expand and you will receive a free respin.
The other reels will spin and more of the chosen symbols can now land. The respins keep continuing until no new chosen symbol lands, or when you fill the entire reels with the chosen symbols. After this you are paid.

Before free spins start you get to pick one of the normal symbols to act as special expanding symbol.
This symbol will now always expand when 3 or more of them appear and will always trigger the respin feature.

Verdict
Providers keep releasing these “Book of” slot games. Some just straight on, some of them add new features, more reels and other stuff to keep it interesting.
Don’t get me wrong, I like these games. But aren’t we seeing enough of them by now? I think we do.
John Hunter and the Book of Tut made it different with those respins during the base game and guaranteed during free spins. Which is a nice touch. But somehow they lose the maximum win you could normally get on these games. This slot maxes out at 4.000 times your bet. While normally expanding the highest paying symbol on all reels would pay 5.000 times bet. I am not sure what they did with the math, but it seems the symbols pay less now.
And also you need 3 of them to expand, for any symbol. Not just 2 for the higher paying ones. Again, different, but is that what you want?
I’m a bit on the fence. I do like the game and I think the respins are fun. But I also think they should have increased the maximum win on this game.
