The Red Queen Overview
The Alice in Wonderland theme has been a very popular theme for slot providers for years and there are dozens of games out there using this world famous book as their theme. For instance Plunderland by Relax Gaming or Agent of Hearts by Play’n Go.
Now Pragmatic Play has released a new game with this theme called The Red Queen. Of course meaning the main antagonist of the book.
The Red Queen uses 5 reels during the base game and has a 6th reel locked. Symbols on those reels can appear single, but also double, triple and even quadruple. And the game uses ways, so the minimum ways per spin are 243. But this can increase drastically when more of those split symbols appear.
Besides regular card symbols and all sorts of characters from the book, you will also find wild symbols and reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. These can also be normal wilds, or multiplier wilds with x2, x3 or x4 on them. There are also mystery symbols on the reels and bonus symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4.
The Red Queen comes with a maximum payout of 5.000 times your bet.

Mystery Symbols
Like I mentioned above, all reels can show mystery symbols. These symbols will all change into one and the same normal paying symbols when appearing. This can be a single, double, triple or quadruple symbol.
Extra reel and Queen Respin
Reel 6 is locked during the base game. This reel will open when you get 2 or 3 bonus symbols during a spin.
Reel 6 will only show a scatter symbol, The Red Queen or blanks.
If the scatter symbol lands, free spins are awarded. If the queen lands all bonus symbols on the reels become wild symbols with a random multiplier of between x1 and x5. After this you get a free respin where these wild symbols are held.
Free Spins Feature
Getting 3 or 4 bonus symbols will award the free spins feature.
Before free spins start a clock will spin landing on an hour. This will determine how many spins you will win. But part of the clock is green. Hours 1, 2, 3 and 4 when you triggered with 3 bonus symbols and hours 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 when you triggered with 4 bonus symbols.
If you land on a green hour, you will collect that many free spins and it will spin again for more free spins.
During free spins the 6th reel is now also opened and becomes a normal reel just like the others.
On top of the middle 4 reels you will find card soldiers which will reveal a special modifier, or nothing during each spin. Each soldier will reveal their own thing, so more than one modifier can become active. These modifiers are:
- +Ways – guarantees a split symbol landing on that specific reel
- +Wild – guarantees a wild symbol with a multiplier of x2, x3 or x5 landing on that specific reel
- +1 Spin – rewards an extra free spin
Verdict
I really like Alice in Wonderland. And I also think the theme works well with slot games. So the theme for me is great.
Also the multiple symbols are an added fun bonus, this can give some massive ways each spin.
The respin feature is nice, but does seem to appear rarely. The same with the free spins feature. It’s a fun feature with those added modifiers, but I have played the game a while and it was hard to trigger. But maybe that was just bad luck for me.
