Thrill to Grill – Overview

NetEnt released Thrill to Grill in October of 2023, shortly before Druid’s Magic.

This online slot game comes with a barbeque theme. Where all ingredients are grilled on a giant stone. It doesn’t look too appealing in my opinion. Somehow the game isn’t colorful or bright enough.

You will find 5 reels that are each 5 symbols high and the game uses 3125 ways. Meaning that symbols pay left to right, starting with the leftmost reel, no matter where on a reel they appear.

Besides standard card symbols, which also don’t fit the theme very well, you will also find different types of barbeque meats. There is also a wild symbols and there are star symbols, which is the bonus symbol.

Collection Feature

This is a random feature that can trigger during the base game. But this feature is always active during free spins bonus.

The middle block of symbols, which is 3 by 3 big, will become active and is called the Grill area. And a random symbol is picked as special Grill Symbol.

Reels will spin and the Grill symbols appearing in the Grill Area will stay there and move around within the area. When you get 5 or more Grill Symbols in the area a respin is triggered where the Grill Symbols stay on the reels.

Free spins feature

5 or more bonus symbols will award 3 free spins.

During free spins the Collection Feature is always active and a random symbol is picked before free spins start. Ant time a Grill Symbol lands during free spins, they are reset back to 3.

There are also 3 special symbols that can land anywhere during free spins that will award extra bonuses:

• Expand symbol – can land above or below the Collection Area and will add the spot it landed on to the Collection Area, making it bigger
• Slap feature – picks a random Grill Symbol. On the next spin, this Grill Symbol absorbs all other Grill Symbols in the collection area before converting into a Grill symbol with a multiplier of x1 plus the number of symbols it absorbs. Multipliers are applied to all winning Grill Symbol combinations.
• Extra Spin – can only land 1 time and will increase the number of spins from 3 to 4. Now each time the free spins reset, they reset back to 4.

Verdict

To be honest, Thrill to Grill is not my favorite game. In fact I think it’s a bit boring even.

Picking a barbeque theme is of course perfectly fine, but it didn’t impress me. Somehow the look and also the fast that there are stars and standard card symbols, don’t seem to match the theme.

Then there is the gameplay. The game uses 3125 ways, which I enjoy. And I also think the Collection Area in both the base game and the free spins is a nice addition. But because of the low maximum payout, this just doesn’t get exciting.

Overall I think Thrill to Grill is not a bad game and some players will enjoy it. But for me it’s one of those slot games I instantly forgot about after playing.
